Travis How

Dr Travis How, Director
Travis is the founding Director of Environmental and Biodiversity Services Pty. Ltd. (EBS). Since completing a PhD in Natural Resource Management, Travis has had over ten years experience in the ecological field with both the public and private sectors. His broad based experience in the field includes flora and fauna studies, the ecological assessment of proposed developments and the preparation of management plans.

With extensive knowledge of the Native Vegetation Act 1991 and the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, Travis has been invited to deliver various workshops, undertake community consultation and manage on-ground works contracts. Recent projects of interest include extensive fauna surveys at Bimbowrie Station in the north of South Australia, numerous vegetation surveys within most regions of SA and a variety of management plans for areas of native vegetation.

Heading up the team at EBS, Travis has gained a strong reputation within the industry for his project management skills. His ability to assess the needs of his clients is a key factor in the success of the business as is his ability to steer the development and implementation of client projects to meet specific targets.

Tonia Brown, Senior Project Manager

Tonia has more than 10 years experience in the industry and specialises in native vegetation surveys and assessments. Tonia has developed a range of skills and extensive knowledge of vegetation across the state and has recently been appointed as EBS Senior Project Manager.Some of her recent projects include:

  • Vegetation survey and assessment
  • Ecological impact assessments
  • Development of biodiversity strategies in urban and rural environments
  • Development of revegetation plans and strategies
  • Preparation of management plans for Heritage Agreements
  • Fauna assessments and surveys
  • Pastoral assessments whilst working with the Pastoral Lease Assessment Program

Tonia was previously employed with the Native Vegetation Group (Department of Water, Land and Biodiversity Conservation) and therefore has an excellent understanding of the Native Vegetation Act 1991. She has also worked extensively with a variety of state and local government bodies including the Department for Environment and Heritage, Local Action Planning Groups and a variety of local councils.

Alison Derry , Ornithologist

Alison has recently joined the team at EBS.   She has 10 years experience in wildlife ecology and management, with an emphasis on birds.   Her experience spans across a diverse range of environmental organisations in the Northern Territory, Tasmania and New South Wales.  The ecosystems,     in which she has worked, range from the Tropics to the Sub-Antarctic.   Her    latest role as Wildlife Ranger on Macquarie Island involved researching the breeding success of threatened burrow-nesting seabirds.   Past projects     have ranged from research into the behaviour of aggressive breeding birds such as magpies to surveying for rare species such as the Gouldian Finch     in the Northern Territory.

Alison has undergone postgraduate studies in ornithology.     She is experienced in bird surveys, bird behaviour and habitat niches.     Alison specialises in collecting, analysing and interpreting ecological data.   Some   of her upcoming projects include: 

  • Proposed wind farm projects
  • Bird utilisation surveys
  • Bi-annual fauna surveys throughout South Australia.

Sally O'Neill, Fauna Ecologist

Sally joined the team at EBS in March, 2008.  She has an Honours degree in Applied Science (Conservation and Park Management) and is currently writing up her PhD thesis on the population ecology of the Pale Field Rat (Rattus tunneyi) from field research completed in Shark Bay, Western Australia. Sally has been involved in a number of research projects ranging from baseline flora and fauna surveys to threatened fauna monitoring and management. Before joining EBS, Sally spent several years with the Department for Environment and Heritage. Sally has excellent field survey skills, including flora and fauna identification, data collection, data analysis and interpretation.

Some of her most recent projects include:

  • Coordination of the Gulf St Vincent Orange-bellied parrot winter survey
  • Vegetation and fauna survey of the Mount Bryan wind farm
  • Hallett Hill wind farm habitat assessment for the Pygmy Bluetongue
  • Mt Bold mammal and reptile survey
  • Iluka Jacinth Ambrosia Haul Road Dust Management Plan, comments and initial project design
  • Roadside vegetation survey for the District Council of Goyder.

Julia Bignall, Ecologist

Julia has recently joined EBS after almost 10 years working in the South Australian Government (Department for Environment and Heritage, and Department of Water, Land and Biodiversity Conservation). She has worked on a number of high profile projects in her previous roles, including the reintroduction of the Tammar Wallaby to mainland South Australia, the Regional Recovery Plan for Threatened Species and Ecological Communities of Adelaide and the Mount Lofty Ranges, and the Integrated Natural Resources Management Plan for the Northern and Yorke Agricultural District.

Julia has a broad range of experience and is skilled in field survey, fauna and flora monitoring, data management, mapping and report writing. She holds an Honours degree in Natural Resources Management and a Masters degree in Wildlife Management.

Alice Egan, Ecologist
Alice is an experienced field ecologist with experience in both the flora and fauna fields. Alice has completed an Honours degree in Environmental Management (focusing on the Yellow-footed Rock-wallaby) which has been complemented by several years working with a variety of programs through Conservation Volunteers Australia and at EBS. Alice has experience in undertaking:

  • Flora survey and assessments
  • Fauna survey and assessments
  • Ecological impact assessments
  • Preparation and implementation of weed and feral animal management plans
  • Management of large volunteer groups and community groups

Recently Alice has undertaken a large flora and fauna survey near Woomera, as well as preparing seven management plans for areas of varying quality native vegetation. Alice has an excellent working knowledge of flora and fauna species of conservation significance and the management of introduced plants and animals.

Matt Launer, Ecologist
Matt is an experienced field ecologist with extensive experience in both the fauna and flora areas. Matt has undertaken a number of vegetation and fauna surveys across South Australia. Matt’s tertiary qualifications span the fields of science, conservation, land management and natural resource management. He has undertaken various projects including:

  • Fauna surveys and assessments
  • Vegetation surveys and assessments
  • Significant tree surveys
  • Wetland assessments
  • Development of revegetation plans and strategies
  • Preparation and implementation of management plans

Matt has excellent field survey skills including flora and fauna identification, use of GPS and data collection. Matt has undertaken projects in most regions of South Australia including the Far North, Mid North, Eyre Peninsula, Mt Lofty Ranges, Riverland and South-east. His experience and enthusiasm make him an integral part of the EBS team.

Chris Harrison, GIS Officer
Chris has extensive experience in vegetation surveying, weed management and revegetation. After completing a degree in Science (Biodiversity and Conservation), he worked for several years as a Bushcare Officer with Native Vegetation Services (NVS). Here he gained extensive knowledge and plant identification skills.   He is now responsible for a large proportion of the GIS mapping at EBS.   Chris also has excellent field survey skills, including flora and fauna identification, use of GPS and data collection. Chris’s areas of expertise include:

  • Flora survey and assessments
  • Fauna survey and assessments
  • Ecological impact assessments
  • Preparation and implementation of management plans
  • Development of Revegetation Plans and Strategies

Serina Lattanzio, Ecologist

Serina Lattanzio is a valued member of the EBS team. Serina is one of our Flora and Fauna Officers and brings to the position an extensive knowledge and experience in flora and fauna surveys, revegetation techniques and weed control.  She has completed an Honours Degree in Applied Science and has been involved in a number of projects, including fauna surveys and a variety of vegetation surveys.

Grant Glazier, Flora and Fauna Officer

Grant Glazier joined EBS in 2008 as a Flora and Fauna Officer, bringing with him a wealth of experience from Native Vegetation Services, where he worked in bushcare and specifically plant recognition. Grant holds a Diploma in Conservation and Land Management. He has been involved in a number of projects including flora and fauna surveys, revegetation and weed control techniques. Grant also has a sound knowledge of GIS mapping techniques.

Bronwen Bowskill, Ecologist

Bronwen recently joined EBS with 8 years experience in the environmental field.  She has qualifications in Natural Resource Management, Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing.  Bronwen’s experience extends to the application of GIS for a range of projects in both consulting and government positions, including data acquisition, geodatabase management, spatial analysis and map production.  She also has skills in natural resource management, bushland regeneration, EIS reporting and the preparation of large scale reports.

 

Area of expertise: Geographical Information Systems
